A broken sewer line often announces itself with a backup that cabling will not fix, and our 24/7 dispatch takes that call at any hour. Until we arrive, stop using water in the building, keep people out of any wet basement, and do not run a snake or a rented jetter through a line you suspect has collapsed.
Sewer line repair covers the lateral that runs from the building foundation out to the public sewer main. That pipe is the owner's responsibility under Town rules. We camera the line, mark the failure, and walk through the repair choices: a spot repair, a lining, or replacing the full run.
Signs the pipe itself has failed
A clog is a blockage in a sound pipe. These signs suggest the pipe has changed shape.
- Cleared, then back. The line backs up again within weeks of cabling or jetting, usually at the same fixture.
- Cable stops short. A machine hits a hard stop at roughly the same footage each time, which often means a collapse or an offset joint.
- Wet or sunken ground. A soft patch of lawn or a dip in the driveway along the lateral's path.
- Sewer smell outdoors. Odor near the foundation or a lawn that is greener along one strip.
- Sewer line leak. A hole in the pipe leaks waste into soil, which may show up as damp basement walls near where the lateral exits.
Line cleared but failing again?
Call (617) 752-0573 and we will camera the lateral. Dispatch never closes.
Collapsed, bellied, rooted or cracked: what each means
A collapse is a pipe that has caved in, so little or nothing passes. A belly is a low spot where soil settled under the pipe and waste pools, which collects paper and grease. A root intrusion is a joint that opened enough for roots to get in. A crack lets groundwater in and sewage out.
Clay and cast iron were common in older lines. Brookline's median home was built in 1938 per Census ACS estimates, so the original lateral under many houses is the one that matters. The camera tells us what you have.
Collapsed sewer line: what to do first
If the camera finds a collapse we will tell you at the visit. Until then these steps limit damage.
Cut the water
Avoid flushing, laundry and showers. A broken lateral has nowhere to send the water.
Keep tools out
Do not feed a rental snake into a suspect line. A cutting head can tear a cracked pipe further.
Note the history
Write down when it backed up, where the cable stopped and any past root work. We use it to read the video.
Mark the yard
Show us where the pipe leaves the building and any soft or sunken ground along its path.
Dispatch runs around the clock and same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows.
Spot repair, lining or full replacement
There is no single best option. The right one depends on how much pipe has failed, how deep it sits and what is above it.
| Option | Good fit | Honest trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | One cracked or offset section with sound pipe on both sides | Does not fix the rest of an aging line |
| Pipe lining (cured-in-place) | Long runs with cracks or root joints, or a pipe under a slab or driveway | Needs a pipe that is still round and can pass a liner. Not for a full collapse |
| Full replacement by trench | Collapse, bellies, or old fiber pipe | Digs up yard, walk or drive, and takes the longest |
| Cleaning only | A sound pipe with debris. See sewer line cleaning | Treats the symptom, not a broken pipe |
The camera findings from a sewer inspection decide which row applies.
What Brookline requires before the dig starts
The Town's FAQ says a sewer pipe must be repaired by a licensed drain layer, and the homeowner owns the line from and including the connection to the public main. Plumbing permits are issued only to licensed plumbers, and homeowners cannot pull them in Brookline, so we handle that step.
Before any digging, Massachusetts law requires a call to 811, at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. Because of that wait, an emergency often starts with a cleaning to restore flow, then a scheduled repair.
What about a line under the floor or a driveway?
A lateral under a basement slab or a paved drive is where lining earns its place, because it avoids breaking concrete. It only works if the camera shows the pipe is still round and not collapsed. We tell you if it does not fit.
Your water service line is a separate pipe from the sewer lateral, and it is covered under water service line repair. If the lateral leaves a West Roxbury house, Boston's rules apply and the owner is responsible for the entire lateral.
What drives the price of sewer line repair
We give a clear price before work starts. Repair quotes swing more than cleaning quotes, so here is what moves them.
- Length of failed pipeA single cracked joint is a different job than forty feet of bellied pipe.
- Depth and locationA shallow lateral in a lawn is easier than a deep one under a drive, a tree or a slab.
- MethodTrench replacement, lining and spot repair use different crews and materials.
- Permits and restorationPermits, inspection and putting soil, walk or pavement back are part of the total.
- Street connectionWork near the public main may involve the Town, and that can affect timing.
Standard homeowner policies often exclude pipe wear and root damage. Some carriers sell a service line endorsement. Check before work, and get repair findings and video in writing.

Sewer line repair questions
Dispatch is open 24/7. At night we can restore flow and run a camera so you know what failed. Permanent repair usually needs daylight, a permit and a utility mark-out, but same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows.
No. It spares your yard or slab, but only works in a pipe that is still round and continuous. A collapsed or heavily bellied line usually needs to be dug.
In Brookline, the owner is responsible for the service line from and including the connection to the public sewer main, per the Town's FAQ. The Town handles blockages in the public main.
They usually enter where a joint has already opened. Roots widen the gap over time. Cutting them clears the line but does not close the opening.
Yes for repair or replacement. Permits go only to licensed plumbers, and the Building Department reviews them. Ask us about timing when you call.
Yes. A video run shows the cracks, roots or sag. If the pipe is sound we say so and suggest cleaning. See drain cleaning for lighter options.
